Stuck in a fitness rut?

It happens to the best of us! We get stuck in a fitness rut which is comfortable! With a few simple strategies you can overcome feelings of boredom or frustration and make the most of your workout time. Even pacing the malls for Black Friday deals offers a great workout. Here are a few other things to try:

1. Working out with a friend or group of friends:
Having someone else with you in the gym has been proven to increase your effort output. It will also give you the opportunity to try some great new moves with a partner like oblique rotations with a medicine ball.

2. Change up your workout:

Plan to switch up your routine every 4-6 weeks. It's around this time that you start to get comfortable with the moves, and your smart body begins to adapt. At this point your body is no longer challenged and you won't make any gains. Try increasing the weight, adding sets, or switching out exercises. You could even try a new method like circuit training instead of split workouts.

3. Change of scenery:
With winter just around the corner most of us are heading indoors for our workouts. This is a great time to reintroduce weights to your routine (if you left them for a summer of running), or fitness classes at the gym. But don't forget all of the fun sports winter offers... skating, nordic and downhill skiing, snowboarding, pond hockey and snowshoeing. If you're lucky enough to live in a warm climate all year long ditch your office job for a yoga mat and the park at lunch.

Give just one of these a try and you're sure to see results. Get more tips like these in New York Times Bestseller Your Best Body Now.

Transforming Yourself to a Gym Regular

You're probably wondering how I went from someone who hated the gym to someone who absolutely loves keeping in shape and staying fit, here are a few strategies to help you make a similar transformation:

1. Only “You” Are Concentrating on You:
Walking into the gym can be intimidating especially if it is filled with people you don't feel comfortable around from big bodybuilder types to too man men. When I first began weight training I had to overcome these same fears. I remember so clearly my first day walking over to the "other side" where people were grunting and groaning and lifting what seemed like impossible amounts of weight. I pulled down my baseball cap, turned up the volume on my walkman (I'm pretty sure that's what I had at this time) and took that first step. Once there I realized that all of these people were actually more concerned about what they were doing to focus any attention on anyone else around them. It's all about YOU in the gym. No one else!

2. Think About What the Gym Will Do for Your Body, Confidence Level and Overall Health:
The side effects of a regular gym-going routine are incredible! Visibly you will see your body develop an incredible shape, your muscles will feel toned and tight, and the skin around your muscles will tighten up too. Best of all are the internal benefits that you can't see. Your bones will become stronger with each weight you lift, your heart will beat more efficiently, your metabolism will increase and your body will use fuel more effectively, you will feel warmer and more healthy overall. This inward and outward beauty will lead to a natural boost in confidence that will travel with you everywhere you go.

3. Seek the Support of Those Around You, Especially Your Partner and Family:
Stepping into the unknown territory of health and wellness can leave anyone feeling vulnerable. This is the time to take advantage of your support systems. Tell your partner, family and friends what you are planning to do. Choose one person in particular who will hold you accountable for reaching your goals. Book a date with them once a month to follow up on the progress you are making. When I began making changes, my family was resistant. Most of this was due to a lack of education about what and why I was doing this, and fear that I would change too much. I decided from the beginning that I would not make special meals for my kids. What was on the table was it! As for my friends, I had to leave a few unsupportive relationships behind and focus on the new, positive connections I was making.

You can do this.

Success & Stories

Did my 2 days of effort work? It seems to have made a difference. I had my first photo shoot today for an upcoming project involving lots of gym shots. I feel pretty good about the rough, unedited shots shown here. What do you think?

Which lat pulldown shot do you like better?

Each picture needs a discerning eye... or 8.

Loving these cute Puma trainers!

Thank you for all of your encouragement and inspiring stories! I love hearing what makes you stay focused and motivated.

Better yet, check out what inspires these amazing Clean Eaters:
Sean Rodman, Nicole Padilla, & Courtney Matthews

Our latest Eat-Clean Diet success stories have lost a combined total of 240 pounds, 1/2 of that weight was lost by the incredible, Nicole Padilla.

You have all inspired me to keep spreading the word of eating clean.

Who else inspires me? How about Olympic swimmer, Dara Torres!

I am looking forward to seeing Dara Torres in action tomorrow at her Oxygen magazine shoot. She definitely represents the Your Best Body Now attitude at 42!

Can It Be Done?

Can 2 days of tight dieting/eating clean get me ready for a photo shoot? Let's put it this way, 2 days of eating dirty can definitely leave a mark! I have been traveling so much over the last two months that it has been impossible to eat 6 times per day in the usual way. I have been living on oatmeal, flax seed, dried fruit, nuts and protein powder eaten whenever and wherever I can. No fun!

So now I have to put the pedal to the medal for a few days to flush out the yaya's and get a little tighter. Can I do it? Can you do it? I am sure I can. I started on Monday eating the usual 6 small meals, no bread, few grain based carbs but plenty of plant based carbs. I can feel the difference in my dress pants, skinny jeans and skirts already. I have really pitted myself hard against the weights and added skip rope sessions in between every set. My workouts have been fantastic. One more big cardio session tonight.

2 days can make a difference. Share your story!

Inspire me!

Keep it tight!

Choosing the Right Gym & Personal Trainer

Choosing the right gym and the right personal trainer are key to successfully creating of Your Best Body Now. Here are some key questions to ask:

The Gym:
1. Is it in a location that you will frequent? This will increase your chances of actually making it to the gym.
2. Is the gym safe and clean? Ask the front desk about the age of the equipment, the maintenance schedule and how often the facilities are cleaned.
3. Do you feel comfortable with the other members in the gym? Some women are put off by seeing hardcore weight lifters in the gym. Be sure you choose an environment that makes you feel good.

The Personal Trainer:
1. What are their credentials and success rate? Ensure they are certified by a nationally recognized organization like Can-Fit-Pro in Canada or ACE in the US and that their certifications are up to date?
2. Do you feel comfortable with the trainer? Ask if the trainer offers a trial session to make sure you like their training style and how you interact with them.
3. What is their price? Determine if you are paying the trainer for sessions or for results.

What did you take into consideration when choosing a gym and/or personal trainer?

Texas Recovery

Last week was an absolute whirlwind bustling around Texas promoting New York Times Bestseller Your Best Body Now, hence my absence from blogging as I try to get my life back in order. It's amazing how quickly laundry and bills and work pile up when you're away for any length of time, let alone 1 week.

I enjoyed my time in Texas and hope the message of living a clean and healthy lifestyle was spread as best as possible. We certainly had a lot of press coverage and events. Thank you to everyone who came out to our Gold's Gym seminar and to our Journey to Health event in Corpus Christi.

I met a ton of people, including Angela Schwarzbach seen to your left, and gathered a great number of success stories that I hope to share with you on my website very soon.

Overall, it is my sincere hope for folks in Texas and everywhere to become aware of how serious a problem being overweight is. It affects individuals, families, communities, states and nations on a palpable level. It is no laughing matter & it needs to be dealt with NOW! You have the ability to make a change within you today. So in the famous words of Nike, JUST DO IT!

Your Best Body Now and Eating Clean at Work

Work holds a whole host of temptations just waiting to sabotage your hard work. Breakfast, lunch & dinner meetings, coffee breaks, celebrations, and your coworker who always has a bowl of M&Ms on her desk can throw you off from your game plan.

It's important to learn to say "no thank you" to a slice of birthday cake, leftover pastries and after work happy hour snacks. Pack your cooler each day and bring it with you to work to help you resist temptation. You will be full & satisfied and less likely to grab unhealthy snacks.

If you do give into temptation, count it as your treat for the week rather than giving up on your plan. Just because you fall off the bandwagon once doesn't mean you can't get right back on it!

Don't forget all of the healthy things you can do at work:
- Take the stairs any time you can!
- Go for a walk or use your office's gym at lunch.
- Create a workout group that meets a few times each week during lunch. You can walk, run, create circuits or bring in fitness and yoga instructors to teach classes.
- Create a food group. Choose 4 or 5 members who are responsible for bringing a healthy lunch to share with the group one day each week. This is a major time saver!

Most importantly, remember why you have made the choice to change your lifestyle. This is about YOU and the goals YOU have set for YOURSELF! Don't let anyone or anything get in the way of that!
